LED systems bring energy savings of up to 78%
According to data from the Politecnico di Milano, the replacement of LEDs in apartment buildings and the digitalization of lighting systems can generate savings of up to 78% and an annual reduction of 664.6 kg of CO2
Last March, the European Parliament approved the green house directive, a measure aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption in the building sector by 2030, with the aim of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
These objectives will also have a strong impact on the lighting industry, as some 21 million homes will have to be renovated by 2033. According to a study conducted by the Politecnico di Milano on behalf of Assil, it is estimated that the replacement of traditional light sources with LED sources leads to a 60% energy saving, percentage that rises to 78% in the case of the installation of an advanced control system for the digitization of the lighting system that integrates manual dimmers, on-time presence sensorsoff, programmed time switching and advanced control system with adoption of wireless communication protocols such as Bluetooth. The simulation was carried out considering a typical apartment building with 80 halogen lamp points with an annual operation of 375 hours and consumption equal to 3,000 (kWh/year).
In terms of emissions, the installation of advanced LED systems would also lead to significant CO2 savings. According to the research, in the level 1 scenario (replacing traditional light sources with LED sources) the CO2 saving is 511.2 kg CO2/year, corresponding to 0.49 cars eliminated each year and 16.54 trees planted each year. In the advanced scenario, the kg CO2/year saved rise to 664.6 with 0.56 cars eliminated/year and 19 trees each year.
"Lighting will play an increasingly crucial role in creating sustainable places," stresses Aldo Bigatti, President of ASSIL. "Buildings and our homes can increasingly become an integrated system with environmental sustainability, and in addition to better control of consumption and significant economic savings will bring greater comfort and well-being for people. Digitalized lighting systems allow you to use light when needed, as needed and where needed. A house thus becomes a place capable of offering significant advantages for visual comfort a space capable of improving the quality of life of the people who live every day the environments".
